How to Make Tear Bears
Everyone seems to love these little furry bears that have graced the pages of many scrapbooks. Here are some tips on how to make your own tear bears.
1. Gather your supplies. You will need mulberry paper, preferably the thicker type, a paint brush or q-tip, cup of water, adhesive, some chalk, a toothbrush and a small piece of black cardstock, a black fine tipped marker and white gel pen. A pattern for a tear bear is not necessary, but can be used.
2. Next you will wet your paint brush and trace the outline of your bear onto the mulberry paper. Depending on the pose of your tear bear, you will need the following pieces, a head, a snout, two ears, a body, two arms, two paws, two legs and two feet.
3. Start gently pulling the paper around your water lines, until you have completely torn the body part from the mulberry paper.
4. After you have pulled apart all the pieces needed for your tear bear, gently fluff pieces with a toothbrush then set the pieces aside to dry.
5. After your paper has thoroughly dried you can add shading to your bear with chalk. Experiment with different colors of chalk on a scrap piece of paper until you find something that you like. Pink chalk looks good on the bears cheeks and inside the bears ears. The rest of the shading will depend on the color of mulberry paper you are working with.
6. Now you can make the eyes and nose. Punches work great for these parts. Use the black cardstock for these pieces. Try different punches to see which shapes you like for your nose and eyes. A paw print punch or heart punch works great for the nose and an oval punch works well for the eyes.
7. Now it is time to glue your little bear together. First, arrange the pieces as they will be glued to make sure you like the finished product. Then adhere the pieces together. The body piece will be glued under the head piece, the legs behind the body, the arms in front of the body, depending on the body posture, the snout to the face, the ears behind the head.
8. Now use your black pen to draw a little line down from the nose and add some freckles, eyebrows, and eyelashes. Use an opaque white marker such as a gel marker to add the highlights to the eyes. Make sure you put them in the same place in each eye, or your bear will look cross-eyed.
There you have it, your very own tear bear! As you practice and do more and more bears you can do more intricate pieces, by adding bows, hats, little dresses, and other clothes to your bears. Or give them props such as umbrellas, flowers, baskets or anything else you can think of.
